Code format

Let DiscountFix invent unique codes in the format you choose, or bring your own list. You pick this under Code creation type in General Settings.

Random codes

Choose Create random discount codes. Every code in the set is unique, and it's checked against the codes already in your store.

FieldDefaultRules
Number of codes to generate1At least 1. The maximum is shown in the label: your remaining monthly allowance, or 50,000 per set on Unlimited. See Plans & limits.
Code length (5–30)6Length of the random part only. The prefix, suffix and separators are added on top.
Prefix (max 20)emptyText before the random part, e.g. SUMMER-. Kept exactly as you type it, including a trailing dash.
Suffix (max 20)emptyText after the random part, e.g. -2026.
Allowed CharactersLetters and numbersLetters and numbers (A–Z, 0–9), Only letters (A–Z) or Only numbers (0–9). Random letters are always uppercase.
Add separators to codeoffSplits the random part into groups for readability.
Separator character(s)-One or more characters. Left empty, it goes back to -.
Separator interval3A separator is inserted after every N random characters. Never at the very end.

The prefix, suffix, length, characters and separators sit under Advanced Settings (Optional). The Summary card shows an example code as you change them.

Format examples

SettingsExample code
Defaults (length 6, letters and numbers)K7Q2MX
Prefix SUMMER-, length 6, separator - every 3SUMMER-K7Q-2MX
Length 8, only numbers, suffix -VIP40718263-VIP
Prefix BF, length 12, separator - every 4BFH3KD-9QW2-LM7X

In the last example there is no separator between BF and the random part, because separators only go inside the random part. Type BF- as the prefix if you want one.

How long should codes be?

Longer codes are harder to guess. For codes that are handed out one by one and worth real money, use 8 or more random characters. Six is fine for low-value or short campaigns. Customers can type codes in upper or lower case at checkout.

Specific codes

Choose Create specific discount codes to use codes you already have. Enter them in Codes to import (One code per line), or upload a file. A badge shows how many unique codes you've entered.

  • One code per line. Spaces around a code are removed, and empty lines are ignored.
  • Exact duplicates are removed automatically.
  • The number of codes can't exceed your remaining monthly allowance (50,000 per set on Unlimited).
  • Codes are used exactly as written.
Codes are not case-sensitive in Shopify

SUMMER10 and summer10 are the same code to Shopify. If your list contains both, one of them will be rejected. The same happens with a code that already exists on another discount in your store.

Import from CSV / Excel

  1. Click Upload CSV / XLSX next to the code box.
  2. Optional: under Download template, pick CSV (.csv) or Excel (.xlsx) and click Download to get a sample file.
  3. Click Select file and choose your .csv, .xlsx or .xls file (max 5 MB).
  4. The codes are added to the box, merged with any you already typed, and duplicates are removed. You'll see Imported N codes from file.

File layout

code
SUMMER10
WELCOME15
FREESHIP2026
  • Put one code per row in the first column.
  • Keep other data out of the file. Every filled cell of the first sheet is read as a code, so a second column with names or notes would be imported too.
  • A header row is optional. It's skipped when its first cell contains a word like code, coupon, promo or voucher.
  • Only the first sheet of an Excel file is read.
MessageMeaning
File is too large (max 5 MB).Split the file, or paste the codes instead.
No codes found in the file. The first sheet is empty, or only has a header.
Imported codes — only the first N were kept (monthly limit). The file had more codes than your remaining allowance. The rest were left out.
Couldn't read the file. Use a .csv or .xlsx file. The file isn't a valid CSV or Excel file. Re-save it from your spreadsheet app.

File upload is available when creating a set. On the Add codes pages, paste the codes into the box instead.

Rejected codes

Shopify refuses a specific code when the same code already exists in your store, on this or any other discount. Those codes are skipped, and the rest of the set is created normally.

  • The set shows a N rejected badge on the Discount codes list.
  • Open the set's details to see the Rejected codes box, with each code and Shopify's reason. It shows up to 2,000 codes.
  • Click Export in that box for a CSV with code, reason columns.
  • Rejected codes aren't live and aren't included in code exports. To use them, change them (e.g. add a suffix) and add them to the set again with Add new codes.

Random codes are never rejected: if one clashes with an existing code, DiscountFix replaces it with a new one.

Tips

  • Use a prefix per campaign (BF26-, NEWS-) so you and your team can tell codes apart in Shopify orders and reports.
  • Printed codes: choose Only numbers or add separators, so customers type them correctly.
  • Need more than 50,000 codes? Create the set, then use Add new codes as many times as you need. All batches share one discount and one set ID.
  • Need the same format again later? Add new codes starts with the set's current format filled in.
