Automatic discounts
Discounts that apply on their own at checkout, without a code. Use them for the rules Shopify's own automatic discounts can't do. Open Automatic Discounts in the DiscountFix menu.
What they can do
| Rule | Example |
|---|---|
| Buy X, get the cheapest Y free | "Buy 3, pay for 2" across any mix of products |
| Spend or quantity tiers | 10% from 1,000, 20% from 2,000 / 10% from 3 items |
| Happy hour | Fridays 18:00 to 21:00, or every night 22:00 to 02:00 |
| Loyalty tiers | 5% after 1 order, 15% after 5 orders |
| Discount at most N items | 20% off one item per order |
| Cap on a percentage | 20% off, up to 500 |
| Fixed amount off shipping | 50 off shipping (Shopify only offers free shipping) |
| Skip items already on sale | No discount on variants with a compare-at price |
| Per-customer limit | Twice per customer, or once every 30 days |
| Total cap | First 100 orders, or until 5,000 is given away |
| Campaign link | Only shoppers who came through your email link |
For a plain "10% off everything" you don't need DiscountFix: Shopify's own automatic discount does that.
Create one
- Open Automatic Discounts. With no discounts yet, pick one of the idea cards (Happy hour, Loyalty tiers, Spend more save more, Buy 3 cheapest free, Shipping discount, First order): the form opens filled in with an example you can change. Or click Create automatic discount to start from scratch.
- Give it a title. Shoppers see the title at checkout, next to the discount, so make it friendly (for example Friday happy hour). Each title must be unique: DiscountFix uses it to match orders to the discount.
- Pick the type and the value, then any of the rules below.
- Click Save. The discount is live right away, or from the start date you set.
You can also ask Shopify Sidekick, for example Create a DiscountFix automatic discount called Weekend 15 that gives 15% off the whole order on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 22:00. Sidekick opens this form filled in, and nothing is saved until you click Save. It can also list your automatic discounts with their orders and sales.
Turn off and on
Use Turn off and Turn on in the list to pause a discount without deleting it.
- Your end date is kept. If the discount runs until 31 December, it still runs until 31 December after you turn it back on. If that date has passed in the meantime, it comes back on without an end date.
- You can edit a discount while it is off. The form shows This discount is turned off, and saving keeps it off. Turn it on from the list when you are ready.
- Shopify's own Discounts page shows a turned-off discount as Expired. That is how Shopify shows paused discounts; it comes back when you turn it on.
Types and value
- Amount off order: a percentage or fixed amount off the order, optionally only on some products or collections.
- Amount off products: a percentage or fixed amount off the eligible products, with an optional cap on how many items get it.
- Shipping discount: free shipping, or a fixed amount off shipping.
The type can't be changed after saving. Order and product discounts can also give free shipping.
Buy X, get the cheapest Y
On Amount off products, tick Buy X, get the cheapest Y free (or discounted). For every X eligible items in the cart, the cheapest Y are free or get the percentage you enter.
Example: Buy 2, cheapest 1, 100% off. A cart with a 100 and a 25 item pays 100. With Repeat for every full group on, 4 items free the 2 cheapest.
Spend and quantity tiers
On Amount off products, tick Use discount tiers and add up to 5 tiers. The highest tier the eligible products reach applies. Below the first tier there is no discount. Choose Tier by: amount spent or number of items.
Happy hour
Tick Only at certain times, pick the days and the hours. The time is your store's time zone. An end time earlier than the start runs past midnight and belongs to the day it started: Friday 23:00 to 02:00 also covers Saturday 00:00 to 02:00.
Loyalty tiers
Tick Reward loyal customers and base the value on what the customer has spent in your store or on their number of past orders. The highest tier reached wins. Guests and customers below the first tier get nothing, so this needs a logged-in customer.
Customer rules
- Customer tags and first order only are checked live at checkout, so they work right away.
- Limit how often each customer gets this discount: a number of uses and/or a waiting time in days. DiscountFix asks once for access to save the count on customers. The count updates a few seconds after each order.
Stop after N orders or a budget
Tick Stop after a number of orders or a discount budget. The discount turns itself off when either limit is reached, and the list shows Limit reached. The count updates a few seconds after each order, so the last orders can go slightly over.
Campaign links
Tick Only for visitors who come through a campaign link and enter a name, for example summer-sale. Share the link DiscountFix shows: any page of your store with ?df_campaign=summer-sale added works. Only carts that came through the link get the discount, with no code to type.
Links need the DiscountFix links app embed. Click Turn on in theme on the form, then Save in the theme editor. It works for all your campaigns.
Progress bar in your store
For discounts with a minimum purchase amount or spend tiers, tick Show a progress bar in your store. A bar tells shoppers how much more to add, for example Add 150 more to get 20% off, and changes to You unlocked 20% off! when they get there. It updates as the cart changes.
Click Turn on in theme to enable the DiscountFix progress bar app embed. In the theme editor you can set the position (top or bottom), the colors, and the two messages, for example in your store's language. Use {amount} and {reward} in the messages.
Results
The list shows orders, sales and discount given for each discount. On Pro and Unlimited, click Stats for the average order, a chart over time and the latest orders. Orders appear a few seconds after checkout.
Plans and limits
- Free: 1 active automatic discount at a time. Premium: 3.
- Pro and Unlimited: no limit from DiscountFix.
- Shopify allows up to 25 active automatic discounts per store, including other apps.
- Changing to a smaller plan: if you have more active discounts than the new plan allows, DiscountFix turns off the newest ones and keeps the oldest running. Their settings and end dates are kept, so you can turn them on again after upgrading, or turn another one off first.
Troubleshooting
| You see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The discount doesn't apply | Check the status in the list, the happy hour, the minimum, customer rules and campaign link. Change the cart once: Shopify recalculates discounts when the cart changes. |
| The campaign link does nothing | Turn on the DiscountFix links app embed and save the theme. |
| No progress bar | Turn on the DiscountFix progress bar app embed, and tick the bar option on a discount with a minimum amount or spend tiers. |
| Another automatic discount already has this title | Titles must be unique. Rename one of them. |
| Your plan allows 1 (or 3) active automatic discounts, or Turn on is greyed out | Turn one of the active discounts off, or upgrade to Pro. |
| Saving would turn this discount back on | The discount has ended and the new end date would start it again, but your plan's active discounts are all in use. Turn one off first, or upgrade. |
| Discounts turned off after a plan change | The new plan allows fewer active discounts, so the newest ones were turned off. See Plans and limits. |
| Shopify's Discounts page says Expired | The discount is turned off. Turn it on from Automatic Discounts. |
